BMI calculator with Asian cut-offs
South Asians tend to face health risks at a lower BMI than Western populations, so this calculator uses the WHO's Asian action points.
Understanding your result
| BMI (Asian cut-offs) | What it means |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 22.9 | Healthy range |
| 23 to 27.4 | Increased risk (overweight) |
| 27.5 and above | High risk (obesity) |
These cut-offs come from a World Health Organization expert consultation on BMI in Asian populations, which found that many Asian people have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels than the international cut-offs suggest.
BMI is a starting point, not the whole story
BMI does not tell the difference between muscle and fat, and it does not show where fat is stored. Waist size is a useful extra check: fat around the tummy is linked with higher health risks. BMI is also not suitable for children, pregnant women or very muscular people.
