Diabetes diet plan with desi food
Practical eating plans that support steadier blood sugar, alongside the treatment from your doctor.
Diabetes is common in Pakistan, and food matters
Diabetes affects a very large number of adults in Pakistan, and many more have prediabetes without knowing it. What you eat, how much and when, has a direct effect on your blood sugar. The good news: small, consistent changes in everyday desi meals can make a real difference.
Sugar ki bimari mein kya khayen? You do not need a separate "diabetic menu". You need to know how to build a balanced plate from the food your family already eats.
How we help
- Review of your reports: fasting sugar, HbA1c, kidney and lipid profile if available, plus your medicines and meal timings.
- The balanced desi plate: half vegetables and salad, a quarter protein (daal, chana, chicken, fish, eggs), a quarter roti or rice.
- Carbohydrate awareness: how many chapatis, how much rice, and which combinations raise sugar less.
- Chai, fruit and sweets: realistic guidance instead of "never again".
- Special situations: Ramzan fasting, weddings, travel and illness days.
- Prediabetes support: weight and lifestyle changes that can help delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
Smart swaps for steadier sugar
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| White flour (maida) naan | Whole wheat chapati, or mix chakki atta with besan or jau (barley) flour |
| A big plate of plain rice | A smaller portion with daal, chana or meat and plenty of salad |
| Fruit juice | A whole fruit with its fibre, at a measured portion |
| Sweet chai with biscuits | Chai without sugar with a handful of roasted chana or nuts |
| Long gaps then a large meal | Regular, moderate meals at similar times each day |
Important: never stop or change diabetes medicines or insulin without your doctor's advice. If you take insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar (hypoglycaemia), diet changes and fasting must be planned carefully with your doctor.

Diabetes diet questions
Can a person with diabetes eat roti and rice?
Usually yes, in the right amount and combination. Pairing a measured portion with protein, vegetables and salad helps slow down the rise in blood sugar. Your plan sets portions based on your reports and medicines.
Which fruits are good for diabetes?
Most whole fruits can fit in small portions, such as guava, apple, orange, pear or a few slices of papaya. Very sweet fruits like mango, chikoo and grapes need smaller portions. Fruit juice raises sugar faster than whole fruit.
Should I bring my reports?
Yes, please bring recent reports such as fasting or random sugar, HbA1c, lipid profile and kidney function, plus a list of your medicines.
